1 Cover

The bacteriostatic top fabric is fire resistant, fluidproof, tear resistant, cleanable, and replaceable. The pleated design allows full integration with the mattress’s Geo-Matt style shear-relieving surface while minimizing hammocking.

2 Foam Topper

The patented Geo-Matt® style foam topper is a high density, medical grade foam. The unique geometric design consists of over 800 individual cells, each of which acts individually to redistribute pressure, to reduce heat and moisture buildup on the skin, and to reduce shear to underlying tissues. This foam topper is 2" in height and includes the unique Heel Slope™ feature, designed to further reduce pressure for the sensitive heel area.

3 Safety Edge Bolsters

Unique raised perimeter Wings® design combines with the patented Safety Edge™ bolster system to encourage the patient toward the mattress and away from entrapment or falls. Lowered, padded opening makes transfers easier and safer for user and caregiver. The Safety Edge consists of a firm 2-part foam bolster whose inner edge contours under pressure to direct the patient towards the center of the mattress.

4 Air Cylinders

The inflation system consists of four urethane air cylinders that run head to foot underneath the body and the foam topper. These cylinders perform the Lateral Rotation Therapy. Inflation/deflation cycles are set but the hand-held control pendant.

1 Outer Removable Coverlet

The purple-colored coverlet is fluid proof, cleanable and flame resistant. It is highly vapor permeable (4500 grams/meter2/24 hours) and fluid-proof. Both of its fabrics (smooth top fabric and the crush-proof air diffusion matrix fabric) are bacteriostatic and maintain a pathway for air flow, even under patient weight. Coverlet can be routinely wiped clean and disinfected in place, or can be removed and machine laundered according to owner’s manual.

2 Inner Air-Delivery Cover

The greenish gray, multi-layered cover supplies air to the microenvironment between the cover and coverlet while serving as a barrier to protect the inside of the mattress from both fluids and vapors, Unlike the purple removable coverlet, it is intended to remain on the mattress at all times.

3 Air Cylinders

The inflation system consists of four air cylinders that run lengthwise underneath the body. Unlike standard low air loss systems, the Easy Air does not lose air from the inflation system for "low air loss", and can be programmed to perform either “flotation” or “alternating pressure.”

The patented Geo-Matt® style foam topper is a high density, medical grade foam. The unique geometric design consists of over 800 individual cells, each of which acts individually to customize patient comfort, support, and pressure reduction and redistribution. This foam topper is 2" in height and includes the unique Heel Slope™ feature, designed to further reduce pressure for the sensitive heel area.

5 Safety Edge™ Bolsters

The patented Safety Edge™ consists of a firm 2-part foam bolster whose inner edge contours under pressure to direct the patient towards the center of the mattress. This adds to patient stability in sitting and lying down, and helps prevent falls and entrapment between the siderail and the mattress.

6 Control Unit

The quiet, energy efficient control unit houses both a high volume air blower and a lower volume air pump. The blower component provides air for the low air loss function through the cover/coverlet, while the pump component provides air to the air-cylinder inflation system. The filters on the control unit need to be cleaned regularly.

The inflation system consists of four urethane air cylinders in standard models, six in the APM Bariatric, that run head to foot underneath the body and the foam topper. These cylinders perform the alternating pressure therapy, and the lateral rotation therapy in the APM2 models. Cylinders inflate and deflate in a fixed 10-minute cycle or selectable cycle on the Bariatric Model The cycles and inflation levels are designed to provide and maintain low interface pressures throughout the mattress, and to redistribute peak interface pressure points during the alternating cycle.

This feature meets requirements of NFPA 101 (“Life Safety Code”), Cal TB 603 and 129, and BFD IX-11. Comes as standard feature on APM2 Safety Supreme.

6 Toggle Switch

The toggle switch changes modalities from “Alternating Pressure” to “Lateral Rotation.” The switch is located under a velcroed fabric flap on the side of the mattress at the foot end, as illustrated.

Control Unit

Model 5800 – Comfort Dial on the Control Unit changes pressures inside the cylinders within a small but perceptible range. This gives the patient some control over firmness, without compromising pressure redistribution or causing bottoming out. Static button evenly inflates all air cylinders for stability during care or transfers. Low pressure indicator assists in function and maintenance.

Four individual, interconnected air cylinders and two elasticized reservoirs that automatically customize pressure distribution to the individual patient. (Note: Bariatric models of 42", 48", and 54" widths have 6-8 cylinders, and 3-4 reservoirs.) Air flows among the cylinders in response to the weight of the body to equalize pressure throughout the system, provide a constant, uniform distribution of safe pressures beneath the patient, and prevent bottoming out.

4 Raised Perimeter Edges

Stable, high-density side bolster with angled top surface forms a firm base for the Geo-Matt top that covers the mattress top side to side. The bolster and the angled top helps to encourage patients to stay in bed and discourage rolling or unattended bed exits. The raised edge minimizes gaps between the bedrail and the mattress, limiting the risk of entrapment.

The patented Ring-of-Air performs several functions. It allows each cell to act individually to conform to the body. It assists in removing heat and moisture from the body by channeling heat and vapor away. And it reduces shearing by allowing the individual cells to move independently, reducing pull on the skin.

Delta Pediatric Overlays

The middle layer of the Delta overlay has a series of unique, 5-sided cuts that allow the body to immerse into the pad, while presenting a flat surface to the patient. This flat surface may assist in eliminating breathing interference when the patient lies prone on the surface.

The Delta is proven in pediatric settings (see study at right), and is designed to alleviate the head and scapular pressures that often arise because infants' heads are large and babies tend to lie on their backs for long periods of time. Delta provides low interface pressures over the head and body of the infant. Delta overlays are safe, non-toxic, heat-resistant and comfortable.

Convoluted Foam Overlays

Our convoluted comfort overlays are made from high-quality, combustion modified polyurethane foam. Available in a wide range of peak and base heights and foam densities to address different levels of surface discomfort. All pads are 72"L x 34"W, and are compression rolled for efficient storage.

Note: Convoluted overlays are considered effective as a comfort measure only. Consult with your Span-America representative for help in selecting the pressure management support surface most effective for your patients' needs.
