Q: I need to have a wheelchair ramp installed from my front door to the driveway. This would be my only way of getting in and out of the home unaided. Does Medicare have any benefits that will cover a portion of the cost?

You may find government agencies and local non-profit organizations that can help you modify your home with a wheelchair ramp.

A Little About Lift Chairs...

Lift chairs – also known as lift recliners, chair lifts, and, in the United Kingdom, rise chairs – are designed to assist people with neuromuscular dysfunction or other disabilities which affect mobility in sitting down or standing up. A lift chair looks exactly like a traditional armchair lounger; the sole difference is the addition of lifting and reclining mechanisms which are operated by a simple handheld remote control. The lifting mechanism elevates the chair from the floor, allowing users to sit without drastically bending their knees or positioning their feet so far away from the chair's base as to create a fall hazard. The reclining mechanism raises or lowers the back of the chair, allowing users to adjust the chair to a personally comfortable angle. Certain models of lift chairs also feature a separate mechanism which allows the foot rest to be adjusted. For people with mobility difficulties, simple tasks such as answering the door or telephone, going to the bathroom, or getting up to prepare a meal may be too difficult and time-consuming due to problems with standing and sitting. A lift chair is a simple, affordable solution to these difficulties, provided that the user can manage to remain standing once he or she leaves the chair. Lift recliners can also be beneficial to a caregiver in helping a mobility-impaired person move around the home.

Lift chairs are most often distinguished by positions. A two-position chair can recline to as much as a 45-degree angle; a three-position chair will recline to an almost completely flat position. On 2 position and 3 position lift chairs, the footrest and backrest operate simultaneously - as the seat back reclines, the foot rest elevates. Infinite-position lift chairs feature a foot rest which operates independently of the seat back recliner. Such infinite-position lift recliners are of particular use to individuals with hypotension (low blood pressure) who have been directed by a doctor to recline in what is known as the Trendelenberg position. In this position, the head is elevated above the heart to promote better blood circulation.
